Course Description
This session focuses on the importance of child engagement in play and learning. In this interactive session participants will learn how to define and recognize when children are genuinely engaged with adults, peers, and materials in sophisticated play and learning. We observe, analyze, and discuss videos of children engaged in daily activities to broaden and deepen understanding of how best to support and promote child engagement in early care and education programs and at home. This workshop is targeted to classroom staff, education managers, directors, and parents.

Learning Outcomes
- Participants will learn how to define, identify, and rate the types and levels of child engagement.

Participants will learn why and how the assessment of child engagement can be used as an indicator of program quality.

Participants will learn strategies for promoting and sustaining high levels of child engagement in programs.
What’s Unique About this Course?
In this highly interactive course participants have an opportunity to observe children in typical learning settings and to identify levels of engagement. The instructor will also ask participants to consider the role of adults in promoting child engagement.

Learning Method
As this course will be delivered virtually through live instruction (zoom), learners will be expected to attend and participate through entire session.
Following the live sessions, learners are expected to complete a short online quiz in order to obtain their certification.
Learners will have a maximum of 60 days to complete this course from the day of registration.

Alan Guttman is the Principal Consultant at Alan Guttman Consulting. He earned an M.A. degree in early childhood education from New York University and has served children birth to 12 years old and their families for over 40 years as a Head Start director; public school district child development program administrator; education specialist; teacher; parent educator; and college adjunct faculty member. Most recently Alan was the Director of Early Childhood Policy & Systems at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education.
