About this Course:

Supporting Mandated Reporters of Suspected Child Abuse is composed of 11 sections. The course begins by providing an overview of the types and symptoms of child abuse, and defines who are mandated reporters and discusses several examples of federal and state laws and regulations related to the reporting of suspected child abuse. Some national statistics are shared around who are the victims of child abuse and who the reporters of suspected child abuse are.

The course focuses on the legal and other reasons for reporting suspected child abuse. We also examine a study that looked at the reasons why mandated reporters sometimes do not file a report even when they suspect child abuse. The course provides recommendations for policies and procedures that programs and organizations can implement to ensure that mandated reporters are supported and protected, and to ensure that when staff suspects that a child has been abused that a report is made to authorities.

Finally, several anecdotes regarding actual cases of suspected child abuse are described along with the reasons why a report must be filed.

After learners complete this course, the instructor will be available for optional “office hours” sessions. Learners seeking a 1:1 virtual meeting with the instructor may purchase these “office hours” meetings in 15-, 30-, or 60-minute increments.
